The Magic of Art Therapy in Hospital Settings

When I asked Britt about her experience working as an art therapist in hospitals, her response was both touching and illuminating. She worked primarily in pediatric oncology and heart transplant units, and interestingly, she was pregnant when she first started this role. Despite initial concerns about how the emotional weight of the hospital environment might affect her, the experience turned out to be incredibly positive.

What struck me most was how Britt described entering patients' rooms. Unlike medical staff who came to draw blood or run tests, she rolled in with her art cart, bringing fun and creativity into what could be very difficult situations. She said she felt like the Easter Bunny, which painted such a vivid picture of the joy she brought to these children who weren't feeling well.

But her work wasn't limited to just creating art. Some patients didn't feel like doing any artwork at all. They simply wanted someone to talk to, and Britt was able to hold that space for them. This flexibility and presence is what made her work so valuable.

Working Across All Ages and Units

While Britt's art cart was stationed in the pediatric unit, where she always started her rounds, she worked with patients of all ages. After completing her time with pediatric patients, she would move to the heart transplant unit on the same floor, and if time permitted, she'd visit the oncology unit as well.

She shared a fascinating story about one patient in the heart transplant unit. For ten months, she visited this man's room, hoping to engage him in art activities. He never wanted to create art, but he did want her to sit and listen to him sing. And apparently, he had a wonderful voice. This story perfectly illustrates how healing work isn't always what we expect it to be. Sometimes, the healing happens in unexpected ways, and for both the patient and the caregiver.

When Cancer Hit Close to Home

Our conversation took a more personal turn when Britt shared her family's experience with cancer. She and her husband often talked about how rare cancer seemed when they were growing up. In her family, they always joked that heart attacks would be their fate, that they'd "go quick."

But then her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer at age 67. What made this particularly shocking was that her mom wasn't a smoker and was incredibly healthy. She spent three hours at the gym every single day, ate well, and did things that lit her up. She was a role model for health, so when she received this diagnosis, the entire family was devastated.

This diagnosis prompted Britt, her husband, and their three daughters to move from Northern California to Southern California to be near her parents during her mother's treatment. What was supposed to be a temporary move became permanent.

Two years after they moved, Britt's mother passed away, and Britt had the profound experience of being with her, just the two of them, in that final moment. The loss was traumatic for everyone, especially the grandchildren. Britt's sister also had three children of similar ages, and losing their grandmother was incredibly difficult for all of them.

A Family's Journey Through Cancer

The challenges didn't end with her mother's passing. Almost immediately after her mom died, Britt's father was diagnosed with bladder cancer. She helped him through his treatment, and thankfully, he came through it successfully.

A few years later, Britt's sister was diagnosed with stage 3B anal cancer. The cancer had already metastasized to her liver, and she had numerous tumors. This began a four-year journey during which Britt described her sister as a rockstar for everything she endured.

Discovering Reiki as a Path to Helping

During this period of watching loved ones battle cancer, Britt felt compelled to find a way to help beyond the usual caregiving tasks. When some friends suggested Reiki training, she agreed, even though she didn't really know much about it at the time.

She completed Reiki One and Reiki Two training with friends and initially practiced mainly on herself as a calming technique. About a year later, her husband signed her up for another Reiki training, and she became a Reiki master.

This training gave Britt a new way to show up for her sister. She could still do all the practical caregiving tasks like listening, grocery shopping, and helping with her sister's children, but now she had another tool. She could use Reiki to help manage her sister's pain. Importantly, Britt never imposed this practice. She only used Reiki when her sister asked for it, making it a gift rather than an obligation.

Self-Care During the Caregiving Years

I was curious about how Britt took care of herself during these incredibly challenging years of caring for multiple loved ones battling cancer. Her answer revealed a multifaceted approach to self-care.

Britt practiced a lot of yoga at home. What made her situation particularly challenging was the geography. After moving to Southern California when her mom was diagnosed, and after her father's journey, her sister was still living back in Northern California. This meant countless hours driving on the I-5 freeway, back and forth between the two locations. During these drives, she listened to inspiring podcasts.

One pivotal moment came when Britt was invited to a screening of Kelly Noonan Gores's documentary "Heal," but couldn't attend because she was caring for her sister. Her sister then asked to watch the documentary together, and it became a transformative experience for both of them.

The documentary, which came out in 2017 and remains one of the top documentaries on Amazon Prime, presented information very different from what her sister was hearing from doctors. It offered a new way of thinking about health and healing, and watching it together gave them both comfort and a new perspective on the thoughts they were thinking.

The Healing Power of Art and Meditation

While Britt had always been into meditation and yoga, during this caregiving period, these practices became even more essential. She also turned to journaling as a way to process everything she was experiencing.

Interestingly, Britt had stopped painting when these health crises began. Before her mother's diagnosis, her artwork had been in galleries and she had an agent representing her work. She had called back all her paintings from galleries, partly because some galleries were closing as the art market went through difficult times, but also because she knew she needed a break.

When her mother was diagnosed, Britt became acutely aware of the energy she was putting into her paintings. With her master's degree in art therapy and marriage and family therapy, she understood the therapeutic benefits of creating art, but during this time, she only drew. She didn't want to work on large-scale paintings.

Paint by Numbers: An Unexpected Form of Meditation

When her sister was diagnosed, Britt started painting again, but in an unexpected way. Her sister gave her a paint by numbers kit, and this turned out to be incredibly soothing. As an artist, I found this fascinating. Britt explained that she didn't have to think about what she was creating. She was just following instructions, and it was very meditative.

This reminded me of the adult coloring book trend, which Britt confirmed was similar in its stress-reduction benefits. Her daughter, who's currently living in London, has also gotten into paint by numbers, which suggests there's something genuinely therapeutic about this structured, mindless creativity.

It's a great reminder that sometimes, even for professional artists, the most healing art isn't about creating something original. It's about the process and giving your mind a break from decision-making.

The Process-Oriented Approach in Art Therapy

Britt's approach to art therapy, both in the hospital and in her current work, focuses on process rather than outcome. There are no rules, no right or wrong. It's simply about doing what feels good.

One interesting observation from her hospital work was that children often didn't gravitate toward painting, crayons, or other traditional art supplies. The most popular medium was something called Model Magic, a clean, clay-like substance that doesn't get on your hands and has a pleasant smell. Britt went through a lot of Model Magic in the hospital, despite it being expensive, because people responded so well to its tactile nature.

Understanding Frequency in Art

One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation was when Britt explained the concept of frequency in paintings. She's even discussed this with people who run art museums.

The basic premise is that artwork emits an energy or frequency that relates to the state of the artist while creating it. While most artists are generally healthy mentally (contrary to the stereotype of the tortured artist like Van Gogh), some create work that carries a lower vibration. This is something people rarely think about, but when you have artwork in your house, it's emitting an energy based on what the artist was experiencing during its creation.

A Divine Download: The Birth of Frequency Art

The turning point for Britt's current work came one night while she was caring for her sister. After giving her sister Reiki for a painful tumor in her back rib, Britt went downstairs after her sister fell asleep and worked on a paint by numbers kit.

That's when she received what she calls a divine download. She was to create artwork and infuse it with Reiki energy so that the artwork would transmit healing frequencies. The initial motivation was practical. Since she was traveling back and forth between Northern and Southern California, she wanted her sister to be able to experience that healing energy even when Britt couldn't be there physically.

She started creating paintings specifically for her sister, infusing them with healing intention. After her sister passed away, Britt realized this was meant to be more than just a personal practice. It was a whole new way of working.

The Sacred Process of Creating Frequency Art

Britt's process for creating frequency art is elaborate and deeply intentional. She begins with prayer, asking God to send healing frequencies through her so that whoever eventually collects the painting will receive exactly the frequencies they need for their greatest healing.

She incorporates crystals and minerals into her work, having studied stone medicine practitioners. These practitioners are part of a lineage connected to Chinese medicine and the body's meridians. Just as the earth has chakras and ley lines, our bodies have chakras and meridians. The minerals from different places on earth correspond to the frequencies we need in our bodies, minds, and spaces.

Britt crushes these minerals into powder, mixes them into the paint, and then sprinkles them on top of the paint. Most of her artwork incorporates sacred geometry as well.

Before she begins painting, she cleanses her own energy. She sages herself or uses lavender and other herbs to ensure her energy is pure and clear. She also cleanses her energy through Reiki. Then she infuses the paintings with Reiki energy as she works.

After the painting is complete and dry, she uses a tuning fork to tune all the materials. She places the tuning fork on the canvas so it vibrates on the wood, going all around the canvas. The result is a canvas literally vibrating with healing frequencies from multiple sources.

Finally, she names each painting with a healing mantra. Collectors and viewers can use these mantras in meditation or as daily affirmations, connecting the visual experience with intentional healing words.

How People Experience the Healing Energy

I was curious whether people could feel the energy in Britt's paintings, especially those who didn't know beforehand about the healing frequencies infused in them.

Britt shared that people who are healers tend to feel the energy most strongly. One of her collectors, who Britt calls her "medicine woman," is an amazing healer studying to be a medical intuitive. She's trained in Reiki and over 30 different healing modalities. She's purchased two pieces that are now in her healing room where she works with clients because she can actually feel the energy emanating from them.

What's even more remarkable is that this collector also works for Boeing and used to work for NASA, so she approaches energy from both spiritual and scientific perspectives. She told Britt that she tested the images online digitally and could verify that the healing frequencies come through even in digital reproductions and prints. This was something Britt never expected.

The Pattern of Collectors Coming Back

Britt noticed an interesting pattern with her collectors. Often, they'll buy one piece and then return for more. They might start with a piece for their office and then want one for their home, or vice versa. People feel and sense the energy, and they want to surround themselves with more of it.

What Britt finds most gratifying isn't ego-driven satisfaction. Instead, it's confirmation that she's on the right track with this work. When collectors tell her they're experiencing healing from the artwork, it validates that she's following the path she was meant to follow.

A Lifelong Connection to Spirituality

When I asked Britt if she'd been into spirituality before receiving that initial download, she confirmed that she'd been extremely spiritual since childhood. As a kid, she would see things and wasn't sure if she should tell people about these experiences. Growing up Catholic, these abilities weren't exactly encouraged, so she kept them to herself. Sometimes, the things she sensed would scare her.

The Reiki training opened up channels that had always been there but were now fully activated. She was already sensing things, but after Reiki training, the channel was completely open and she was receiving information constantly. As she put it, she definitely "leveled up" with Reiki.

Gallery Exhibitions and Artistic Recognition

Britt's work has been shown in various gallery settings over the years. About 20 years ago, she had her work in galleries, including one show in New York at Strike Art Fine Art in Chelsea. For any artist, having work shown in New York is a milestone, and this was the first time Britt felt like a "real artist."

More recently, she had a show in LA in 2024 called "Frequency" that featured multiple artists. What made this exhibition special was being surrounded by other artists whose work, while not exactly like hers, shared similar themes around consciousness and frequency. Hearing their different perspectives on the same core ideas was exciting and validated that other artists are doing similar consciousness-based work.

Another significant exhibition was at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santa Barbara. This showing came through the Healing House, Britt's annual art and wellness event. The art was curated by Aubrey Weal of the Wine Holt Project and Freddie Janko, who was on the museum's board. Hearing them discuss her artwork in the context of other spiritual and nature-based art was particularly meaningful.

How Anyone Can Create Healing Art

One of my favorite questions was how everyday people who aren't trained in Reiki or art therapy can tap into similar healing energy through creativity. Britt's answer was beautifully simple and accessible.

She believes we complicate things unnecessarily. The key is 1000% intention. Whatever energy you bring when you sit down to create something, whether you're an artist or not, whether you're writing, painting with water, or even drawing in the steam on your shower door, that's what matters. You're making a mark, and it counts.

For anyone wanting to incorporate healing frequencies into their creative work, Britt suggests a simple practice: Put your hands on your heart and bring your awareness to your heart space. Think about something you love, and then let that love flow through your hands, which are an extension of your heart chakra, into whatever you're creating.

She emphasizes having compassion for yourself and releasing rules about what the outcome should look like. Instead, approach it with curiosity. How will this turn out? You have no idea, just like in life. We can have intentions about how things will unfold, but the actual result is often different. Trust that the process is the most important part, along with the intention behind it.

One-on-One Healing Work & Quantum Healing

Beyond creating art, Britt offers one-on-one healing work through a comprehensive program. She works with clients using quantum healing hypnosis sessions combined with channeling.

Before the hypnosis session, clients send her questions about their health, business, relationships, past lives, life purpose, or whatever they're seeking guidance on. Britt channels answers to these questions before the hypnosis session. Then during the hypnosis session, which is like an extended guided meditation lasting about an hour and a half to two hours, the client receives information while in that altered state.

What's remarkable is that when they compare notes afterward, the channeled information and the hypnosis information are always the same. They might be worded slightly differently, but the same key words and messages come through. This happens 100% of the time, which validates the information for clients who might otherwise doubt what came through during their hypnosis session.

After the initial session, Britt works with clients for several weeks, addressing their limiting beliefs, exploring their life experiences, identifying blocks, and finding ways to move through them.

Creating Custom Healing Artwork

As part of her one-on-one work, Britt creates custom artwork specifically tailored to the healing frequencies each client needs. Recently, she had a client who expressed in her session that she wanted to do artwork herself. So Britt invited her over, and they created two separate paintings together. Britt guided her through the process, and after the client did the base layer, Britt painted healing energy over it.

Now those two paintings hang side by side in the client's home, where she can meditate with them or simply breathe and look at them, knowing she's receiving healing. Britt calls this "passive healing" because you don't need to actively do anything. You're still receiving healing just by being in the presence of the artwork.

The Concept of Passive Healing

The idea of passive healing is particularly powerful for people who struggle with receiving. Many of us are uncomfortable with simply receiving without doing something in return. For people in that space, like Britt's sister was during her illness, frequency artwork offers a way to receive healing without any effort.

You can use the artwork as a meditation focus, or you can simply sit in front of it and do nothing except receive. For those of us who have blocks around receiving, this is actually a valuable exercise in itself.

Britt explains that passive healing works with crystals and stones as well. You're receiving healing from the minerals in the paint or in the stone simply by being near them. This concept is rooted in ancient wisdom.

Ancient Wisdom Behind Crystal Healing

Britt mentioned a fascinating textbook called "Stone Medicine" that's transcribed from the lectures of an 88th generation stone medicine practitioner from China. This book demonstrates that there's actual ancient wisdom behind working with crystals and minerals. It's not just "woo woo" as skeptics might claim. It's real, documented knowledge passed down through generations.

For anyone interested in crystals and energy work, Britt highly recommends this textbook, which is available on Amazon for around 50 to 60 dollars.

Expanding the Healing Toolkit

I was curious about when channeling and quantum healing hypnosis became part of Britt's practice. She explained that she's in her fifties now and has tried many things over the years. In human design terms, she's a generator and a three-five, which means she needs to try lots of things, sometimes "fail" at them, and then teach others what she's learned.

She's been training in various healing modalities for decades, often getting certifications because part of her wanted to prove something. She earned two master's degrees and kept seeking more knowledge, not really knowing she'd eventually move in this particular direction.

When her sister was going through treatment, Britt discovered Dolores Cannon's work and became fascinated with quantum healing hypnosis technique. However, Dolores Cannon's training is very strict about protocol. You cannot incorporate any other healing modalities into her specific technique.

Britt wanted to combine Reiki, energy healing, art, and other modalities, so she found Candace Craw-Goldman, who had trained and worked with Dolores Cannon for years. Candace created Beyond Quantum Healing (BQH), which allows practitioners to incorporate other healing modalities alongside the hypnosis work.

Validating Messages Through Dual Channeling

Britt then learned about Sarah Landon's channeling course and took it, not knowing exactly how all these pieces would come together. As she started doing quantum healing hypnosis sessions with people, she noticed that clients often doubted the information coming through during hypnosis because they weren't used to this kind of work.

Sometimes the answers would come through in symbolic form, like seeing a snake in response to a question about their relationship to food. Britt would have to research the symbolism to help clients understand, and it always correlated, but she wanted a more immediate way to help clients trust what was coming through.

That's when she had the idea to do channeling before the hypnosis session. Clients would send their questions ahead of time, Britt would channel the answers, and then they'd do the hypnosis session. Afterward, they'd compare notes. There's no way Britt could know the personal information that comes through for clients she's never met, and yet the channeled information and the hypnosis information always align. They're pulling from the same field of consciousness.

The Akashic Records

Britt has also trained in the Akashic Records, which is another way of accessing this same field of information. She's found that with energy healing in general, it's always about intention and being open to receive information without expectations about how it will come through. It might be visual, auditory, or just color. Whatever form it takes, if you sit with it long enough, meaning emerges.

One key difference in how Britt works compared to some other practitioners is patience. When she asks someone in hypnosis a question and they respond that they don't see anything, she doesn't rush to the next question. She sits and waits. If you wait long enough, something always comes through.

Yoga as Self-Care and Spiritual Practice

Yoga has been an important part of Britt's self-care and spiritual practice, though she never expected to become someone so dedicated to it. She first experienced yoga at age 19 when she was studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her performance art teacher, Carmela Rago, would have students do yoga at the beginning of class to get them out of their heads and into their bodies, which was perfect preparation for performance art.

That was Britt's first real experience with asanas (yoga postures) and breathwork. She practiced yoga off and on for years, finding it challenging to maintain a regular practice while pregnant and raising children. But over the last eight years, she's been very committed to going regularly.

For her, yoga's benefits are multifaceted. It clears your energy, gets you out of your head, involves breathwork that's good for your lungs, and uses poses that release stored emotions and energy. She became good friends with teachers at her yoga studio and found that yoga offers a beautiful way to find community. You don't even have to talk to people, but you're together with a common goal. After class, everyone smiles at each other in a blissful state, having released everything and becoming super present.

Yoga and Family Healing

One of the most touching stories Britt shared was about doing restorative yoga with her mother after her cancer diagnosis. Her mom was super Type A, a Jazzercise enthusiast who went to the gym religiously. She was not someone you'd ever expect to do yoga.

When Britt's mom was diagnosed, Britt reached out to a friend whose father was one of the founders of the Chopra Center with Deepak Chopra. The friend connected her with his father, who provided a list of recommended practices. Britt's mom went to the Chopra Center and came home transformed. She started doing yoga and meditating, practices she never would have expected to embrace.

Seeing her mother in these practices was beautiful and amazing. Going to restorative yoga together became a bonding experience and a source of healing downloads for Britt.

Spiritual Experiences During Yoga

Britt doesn't know if it's common, but she has visitations from spirit during yoga. She receives messages for yoga teachers and for practitioners next to her. Sometimes she feels hesitant to share these messages, worried people will think she's crazy, but the experiences are profound.

Moving your body in certain poses releases emotions that are stuck. This is why you don't necessarily need traditional therapy if you practice yoga. You're releasing and breathing through things, and emotions come up in a safe space. It's common for people to cry during hip openers because we store emotional trauma in our hips.

The Healing House: Art & Wellness Events

The Healing House is Britt's annual art and wellness event, born from two motivations. First, she wanted to give people the full experience of what's in her paintings: the meditation, sound, Reiki, and all the healing elements. Second, she couldn't expect traditional galleries to understand all the spiritual and energetic aspects of her work. She decided to move outside the gallery system since she's not someone who fits into a box anyway.

Each Healing House event has been a little different and has been held in various locations: a regenerative farm, an art gallery, and a hotel in Beverly Hills. People have approached her about doing Healing House events for other causes, including a potential event for the anniversary of the Palisades fires.

The Seven Healing Practices

At each Healing House event, Britt guides participants through seven healing practices: grounding, inspiration, movement, nourishment, gratitude, forgiveness, and grace.

Grounding starts with a sound bath and guided meditation.

Inspiration involves introducing participants to the artwork.

Movement is where Britt's dream of a big disco dance party comes in. At her most recent event, people finally got up and danced. When you get people moving their bodies to fun music, even though they feel silly at first, they eventually let go. The smiles and joy that emerge are powerful healing tools.

Nourishment has taken different forms depending on the venue. At the regenerative farm event, they served beautiful platters of food grown right on the land where they gathered.

Gratitude involves a tea ceremony. Britt wants everyone to leave knowing that every time they have their morning tea or coffee, each sip can be an invitation to think of something they're grateful for.

Forgiveness has been particularly powerful. At the last Healing House, they did a physical forgiveness practice: think of something you need to forgive, rub your hands together and feel the heat of that thing, then shake it off into the earth. People who needed to forgive something major felt huge releases.

Grace is about surrender and acceptance. Britt acknowledges that surrender and acceptance are difficult. Sometimes you can't accept something because you haven't figured out the right way to look at it or haven't understood the lesson in it yet. She reminds people that every experience is a lesson our soul chose for this lifetime. Having compassion for ourselves and others is key because we're all doing the best we can.

Sound Healing and Family Training

While Britt isn't a certified sound healer, she's been using sound bowls for years. Her husband and youngest daughter went to India for yoga teacher training and breathwork certification a couple of years ago. Her daughter was only 17 at the time. After that trip, they invited one of the leaders from the ashram in India to do the sound bath at a Healing House event.

There's real science behind the frequencies in sound baths. Since we're made of energy, these frequencies get into our cells and heal them. It's truly powerful work.

When and Where Healing House Happens

Healing House events don't follow a strict schedule. Britt has held them in January, May, and August. People have asked her to do private Healing House events, and she's open to that.

What's consistent across all these events is that people never quite know what they're about to experience when they arrive. Just like with her paintings, Britt sets the intention and prays for God to send the energy that everybody needs through her and through the experience. Every single time, when people leave, they're hugging, smiling, and experiencing more joy than they've felt in a long time. It's not because of Britt personally. It's about providing the space for people to have that experience.

The Importance of Developing Your Intuition

As our conversation drew to a close, there was one more crucial topic Britt wanted to address: intuition. She's recently been diving deep into intuition development and believes it's fundamental to everything else we've discussed.

Whether you want healing from frequency art, want to experience quantum healing hypnosis, or simply want clarity about your life, your intuition is where you'll find those answers. Developing an intuition practice is essential.

We often think we need to hire a coach to tell us the answers or go to a doctor for medical issues. While there's nothing wrong with seeking expert guidance, we are ultimately the ones who know the real answers. We know what's going to heal us. We have to develop a practice of connecting with our intuition.

With everything happening in the world, where nobody knows what's true anymore, our intuition is our guiding light.

Confident Intuition Workshops

Britt offers a monthly workshop called Confident Intuition. The workshop meets every month so people can continue developing their intuition over time. You can jump in whenever you'd like, and she's opening a membership in the next couple of months where people will be able to access past months' workshops as well.

Currently, if you can't attend the live workshop, you'll receive a recording. However, the benefit of showing up live is that you can ask questions, which is valuable since we all have questions when it comes to developing our intuitive abilities.

Final Thoughts

My conversation with Britt Michaelian was rich with insights about healing, creativity, spirituality, and the power of intention. From her early work as an art therapist in hospitals to her current practice creating frequency art and facilitating transformative healing experiences, Britt's journey shows how personal tragedy can become a catalyst for profound healing work, not just for ourselves but for others.

What resonates most is her message that healing doesn't have to be complicated. It starts with intention, with love, and with being present. Whether through creating art, practicing yoga, developing intuition, or simply being in the presence of healing frequencies, we all have access to tools that can support our wellness journey.

If you're interested in learning more about Britt's work, experiencing her frequency art, or participating in a Healing House event or Confident Intuition workshop, I encourage you to visit her website and follow her on Instagram. Her work is a beautiful reminder that creativity and healing are deeply interconnected, and that we all have the capacity to tap into both.
