A Lifelong Calling
Dr. W traces his connection to the four elements back to his college years. As a science student with a deep love for nature, he took an astrology course that introduced him to the framework of fire, air, water, and earth. The concepts struck him immediately and shaped the way he began to see the world.
Over the years, he discovered that these principles were not just personal insights but the very foundations of Western thought. Hippocrates, often called the father of medicine, and Aristotle, whose ideas continue to shape philosophy and science, both taught and lived with the four elements as a guide. Across the Mediterranean and beyond, the elements were central to how people understood life.
The Four Elements in Nature and the Body
In their simplest form, the four elements appear in nature as the sun (fire), the air we breathe, the water that sustains us, and the earth beneath our feet. But Dr. W explains that these natural forces are also principles within us.
Fire is connected to the nervous system, the light and energy that fuels our thoughts and spirit.
Air is expressed through our muscles, allowing us to move through space and generate chi, or life force.
Water is the blood, nutrition, and visceral system that keep us nourished and balanced.
Earth is our bones and structure, the grounding stability that gives us form.
Practical Wisdom for Daily Life
For Dr. W, these principles only matter if they can be lived. He emphasizes practices that bring the four elements into the body in tangible ways.
One example is walking. Earth energy is rooted in the heel, and a strong heel strike while walking strengthens that grounding principle. Modern cushioned sneakers, he explained, often dampen this connection, making us softer in body and spirit. Harder-soled shoes, or even walking barefoot when possible, help us reconnect with the sturdiness of earth.
Another simple practice is rolling up a towel to support areas of structural fatigue in the body. The firmness of the towel carries earth energy, which can help release tension and restore alignment.
Nutrition, too, can be seen through the elements. Protein represents earth, building structure. Carbohydrates align with fire, providing energy. Herbs carry elemental principles of their own, offering both nourishment and healing.
Movement and Breath
While earth gives us structure, air gives us space and movement. Our muscles embody this principle, helping us move through space and generate vitality. Too much sitting weakens the air element, while movement restores it.
Dancing, walking, or simply moving to music are ways to engage the air principle. As Dr. W explained, “Muscles give us robustness, and we want to live a robust life.”
Breath is another key. Breathing deeply into the diaphragm awakens the air element and restores balance in both body and spirit. Together, breath and movement create vitality and resilience.
Walking as a Spiritual Practice
Walking, for Dr. W, is more than exercise. It is central to what it means to be human. He encourages walking daily, ideally outdoors. Not only does it strengthen the earth element, but it also opens the mind to insight and creativity.
Indoors, our senses are shaped by artificial stimulation. Outdoors, we are awakened by nature. As we walk, our minds process, reflect, and often receive new ideas. Walking can be meditative, a time of quieting the mind, or reflective, a time for problem-solving and insight. Either way, it connects us to something greater.
Astrology and the Elements
Astrology, often misunderstood, is another lens for the four elements. Dr. W explained that the zodiac is essentially the fracturing of oneness into twelve parts. Each sign represents an ideal shaped by elemental principles.
Whether or not one practices astrology, the four elements provide a framework for understanding balance in life. Fire is spiritual oneness. Earth is material abundance. Water is emotional connection. Air is intellect and clarity. Together, they reflect the full spectrum of human experience.
Living a Four Element Inspired Life
At its heart, the four element approach is about balance. Weaving these principles into daily life can be simple:
Walk with awareness and connect to the earth with each step.
Eat in a way that balances fire, air, water, and earth.
Move your body and breathe deeply to cultivate vitality.
Pay attention to the rhythms of nature and the insights that arise from them.
Dr. W describes this way of living as “a Four Element inspired lifestyle.” It is not about adding complexity, but about noticing the principles that already exist in us and around us.
His closing words bring it back to the essentials: “Go for a walk. Breathe well. Enjoy the outdoors.”
